I stifled a groan. My stomach didn't. The three workers looked to us and back to the pie warmer. Surely between the three of them they could hustle up the manpower to re-open the kitchen? Nope, they wanted us to buy those crusty pies which had been stewing deliciously in the warmer all day.

This unassuming roadside cafe next to the petrol station at Derwent Bridge serves good coffee and food. We stopped for lunch after visiting Lake St Clair and the Wall in the Wilderness. Our burger and mulligatawny soup was delicious and it was really good value.

No change came back. We sat out in the sun and chewed the pastry and swallowed what I must concede was good tasting mince.

I've been coming here for 10 years on and off. Its always spot on. Super good value, classic country service and it smashes its competitors easily easily easily. Wombats are also very cool animals ay.

Definitely worth a stop for lunch on the Hobart - Strahan drive. The burgers are delicious and amazing value. Our food was ready so quickly.

The hungry wombat, I mused, must cater only to it's name sake, some nocturnal animal willing to prey upon roadkill and french backpackers. Some rabid creature of matted fur and tasteless culinary habits as to not even ask if the kitchen was closed.

At least they would give us a discount, the pies weren't going to last another day without plastic surgery. This was Australia.

"We have beef curry, vegie, chicken.." The ladies words drawled on. It was 3pm, for ocne Derwent bridge was sunny, and a trickle of sweat rolled down my brow, my stomach rumbled, my hands shook

A wombat, I believe scuttled past us. It may have been a local, I am not sure. What I am sure is that it winked at me. Did it know something I didn't ? Was the kitchen only closed to us "tourists", us "outlanders"? I vowed then, wiping my greasy hands on my short-shorts, that i would get to the bottom of this. I will be back. I have no choice, there is not much else in the area.
